Deep Dive - Sensory Needs with Ali Neal
Sensory Processing Deep Dive
A 3-Hour Training with Occupational Therapist Ali Neal
Understanding sensory processing can transform how we interpret children’s behaviour and support emotional regulation.
Join experienced Occupational Therapist Ali Neal for a practical 3-hour deep dive into sensory processing. In this session you’ll explore how children experience the world through their sensory systems and how this influences behaviour, learning and emotional wellbeing.
Many behaviours that adults find challenging can be linked to how a child’s brain processes sensory information. When sensory input becomes overwhelming or isn’t registered clearly, children may struggle to stay calm, focused and regulated.
This training will help you better understand what may be happening beneath the surface and how to respond in ways that support regulation rather than escalate distress.
What You’ll Learn
How sensory processing works
Sensory processing is the way the brain receives, organises and responds to information from our senses. When this process works well, children can stay calm, alert and ready to learn. When it doesn’t, everyday situations can feel confusing or overwhelming.
The key sensory systems
Alongside the familiar senses of sight, sound, smell, taste and touch, children rely on other important systems including:
Vestibular – balance and movement
Proprioception – body awareness
Interoception – awareness of internal body signals such as hunger, pain and emotions
These systems play a crucial role in self-regulation and behaviour.
Recognising sensory needs in behaviour
Some children are highly sensitive to sensory input, while others need much stronger input to notice it. These differences can influence attention, emotional responses and behaviour.
Practical strategies to support regulation
Ali will share simple sensory strategies that can help children return to a calm, alert state, supporting participation in learning, play and relationships.
The session takes place on Monday 27th April 2026 9:30am-12:30pm on zoom. If you can’t make it live the recording will be sent out afterwards to those who are registered.
There will be a break in the middle, and you’re welcome to bring a drink or snack (or brunch!) with you.
